Job App Rejections: Possible Culprit - My Former Boss (Poor Reference Call Responses)
The issue at hand: My job qualifications are BOMB, no exaggeration. I only apply for what, on and off paper, I match up to based on the required and preferred statements listed in the web posted job description.
The underlying issue I also have now: I'm afraid my last direct manager (a personal work nemesis/we butt heads, though always in a professional manner) may be a, or the sole, culprit for the high number of rejections I've been receiving from seemingly obvious employer job matches.
Why I think this (and this is the assumptive, tricky part I need feedback on): I believe he may be replying to job reference check calls in a negative or inappropriately disqualifying, opinionated way - and i'm not sure how to approach him via email or phone to inquire about whether or not he has received such reference calls at all, or if that is something I should assume he would feel obligated to admit at all.
What facts am I missing about reference check calls?
Do they simply ask "Did _so and so_ work at _so and so_ between _date and date_ as an _job title?" or is this form of background check about qualifications more personally in-depth when it comes to directly contacting former managers?
I don't want to jump the gun and reach out to ignite an email tag war with my former boss by asking any accusation-implied questions he may respond defensively, or even falsely or not at all, to in order to protect himself.
Thanks in advance, ladies! Cheers, xx
