Women in cybersecurity

As I work remotely from home during the pandemic, I'm considering transitioning from my current role to Cybersecurity. I currently help with an early family member after work, who takes up a lot of my time. My only issue is how do I find the time to study and make it a priority to earn a certification?

What a great time and a great field to transition to! As we continue to advance with technology especially in the world of healthcare cybersecurity will only grow in demand. I know that it can be difficult to find time especially caring for an elderly family member and all other things that keep us afloat. Here are some of my thoughts on this: 1. The first and most important step to achieving this goal is to mentally make the commitment that you will earn your certificate. Having a committed mindset will allow you to push past the times when you are tired or feel like you want to give up. It is like having the little engine that could in the back of your head saying you can do just a little more. 2. Give yourself a time frame of how long you want it to take to obtain your certificate, especially if you will be doing self-guided classes. 3. Use a calendar and live by your schedule. You should schedule all things that you need to do and schedule in study time. Remember that it will feel jam packed but only until you obtain your certificate. 4. Ask for help from others to pick up the slack on things in your personal life if possible. 5. I like to do focus meditations during the day to shake off the stress. It's important to give yourself breaks and refuel, so find 5-10 minutes of self care about 3 times a day. 6. Research the certificate courses thoroughly so you find one that fits your learning style and offers the support you need. No sense in wasting time and money. A good friend of mine said they usually find people online who took the course and ask for their opinion via linkedin or other platforms like this one. 7. YOU GOT THIS! I hope this is helpful!

This is all great advice! One build on the second recommendation is to ensure the timeframe is realistic given what you have on your plate. It's a balance between having an ambitious course load that will get you to your goal quickly and ensuring you don't take on too much that could be overwhelming and potentially demotivating. I'm actually in a similar situation and have decided to start with one just class for now that I found on Coursera. I know I can always add more later. Good luck!
