I could really use the input of the community on this. This note is a long one, so I appreciate everyone taking the time to read this:
I had 4 interviews with a tech startup I’m very interested in working for. They all went very well. Based on their business model, the company has been growing since March(software startup in a key sector as companies pivot online) and needed to make a few leadership hires. They called me on Friday May 15 saying the CEO and CRO had really enjoyed their conversations with me, confirming my salary range and were going to start checking references and I’ll hear back from them very shortly. On Monday, May 18, I received a frantic call from the recruiter asking if my current employer knew I was looking. My current employer does not know about this specific opportunity. Nonetheless, the recruiter said she just wanted to be sure and she would follow up with me by tomorrow morning (Tuesday, May 19). All of my references said they were standard reference checks and gave my glowing references - one even said the recruiter remarked ‘we’re excited to have her.’ They spoke to my last reference late in the afternoon on Tuesday, May 19. During all my reference checks, they did ask my references if they thought my current employer would be mad/ irritated with the tech startup i was interviewing at, and all said ‘no, my current employer would be very supportive. (Side note: I have no doubt my employer would be supportive and happy for me - I just don’t see the point in saying something to my current employer if it’s not cemented yet.) I heard nothing on Wednesday, so on Thursday, May 21 I followed up with a quick, friendly note to assuage concerns about the relationship with my employer, and ask about next steps. The recruiter responded within the hour saying she was ‘sorry about the delay- it had been a busy week, and will follow up with next steps very shortly.’ I didn’t hear anything from her on Friday, and it has me very concerned. I’m a fairly positive all of my references gave me glowing reviews. There’s nothing in my work history - even if they called around to others i did not list - that I believe would adversely impact me getting an offer. I’m concerned another candidate came in last minute, and they’re stringing me along until that person accepts. I know a reference check is in no way an offer of employment, but based on my conversations with the company, i would think this would move quickly.
My questions: what do you think might be going on? And I certainly don’t want to inundate the recruiter, but when would it be appropriate to follow up again? Anything else I should do at this point?
Thank you - I’ve been a nervous wreck, and appreciate any guidance, advice or explanations (even if they’re not favorable).
