Thanks for posting! After dealing with anxiety flair-ups for many years (it is hereditary on my Dad's side) I finally sought treatment via my PCP 2 weeks ago and feel like a "new" person already. I typically follow more of a holistic approach to my health, but I knew that I needed to take care of myself and my daughter. I now speak more openly about my anxiety to friends and family. Being a NYer I knew that I needed to be strong and I am so proud of myself for not being "ashamed" of my anxiety.

Part of being strong is being an advocate for yourself and turning your test into your testimony. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you're feeling better!

So what are the causes of each of these "signs of anxiety" and what is recommended to help these symptoms? Anyone can just write a list, how is this helpful?

Virtually anything can cause anxiety - it depends upon the person and situation. If you're having a difficult time with anxiety, you should seek professional help. Reducing anxiety is another article altogether. I've already written one specifically about anxiety while speaking publicly. Please feel free to read it. Have a great day!

Prior to COVID-19, approximately 40 million American adults — roughly 18% of the population — have an anxiety disorder, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher now due to the pandemic and homeschooling alone.

This makes me very happy. There has long been a stigma. I know great progress has been made, but women get hit i n different ways. Men are not allowed to be helpless or in need. Women are expected to be helpless (even today). Women who are seen as strong are afraid to show weakness for fear of losing any ground made. All of us- as HUMANS- are allowed to have moments of great weakness and great strength. We are made to be social and lean on each other and lift each other. We need to give ourselves permission to feel whatever comes along. It is how we acknowledge it, adjust, heal, and take the next step that shows our inner constitution.

I knew I needed to see a doctor, but reading my symptoms just confirmed, how badly I need to make an appointment. I was never filled with anxiety, until I had my daughter. I am now riddled with it, but she is almost 9 years old. It seems that the older she gets the worse the anxiety gets for me

Oh Honey! Wait until you get to the teen years! I wish I could offer some comforting words, but I'm glad you are going to make an appointment because your daughter needs to see you deal with your anxiety in a healthy way. My daughter and I, by the grace of God, started in AlAnon because of her stepfather's drinking, and it made a huge difference-- helped us get through the growing pains, and we still use what we learned today. BTW, her stepfather just got his 30 year thingy, so success in the end. Not saying AlAnon is right for you, but there are good programs out there. I sincerely wish you the best! Thanks for posting.

I spent many years in Alateen and Alanon. It is helpful for all sorts of addictive behaviors, codependents, and people pleasers. It teaches a lot of wonderful coping mechanisms that transfer into other areas of your life. The main thing is finding a safe space where you feel comfortable for both of you to grow together.

I've lived with anxiety most of my life. Being in quarantine has actually helped me tremendously. My job is being held for me, I'm getting unemployment, I haven't had to put gas in my car since March. I'm saving money and I'm not dealing with a boss breathing down my neck. I'm high risk (elderly and lung disease) so my doctor is the one saying I have to stay off work. Fine by me. I know one day I'll have to go back and I'll get all the anxiety signs again. But my real plan is to go back for about a month to catch up on everything that's been sitting since the day I was quarantined and then fully retire.

There's a difference between anxiety and a healthy amount of realism and apprehension. If you're health is that fragile this may be a good time to speak with your Doctors and explore the possibility of SSDI. It will pay more than going out on social security early and you can still work a small part-time job. They usually cap monthly income around $900. My mother has agoraphobia and emphysema as well as an autoimmune disorder, so we struggled for many years to keep her at work in a meaningful way. I often wonder if it was to the detriment of her emotional and physical health. Best of luck!

I just turned 66. In order to get SSDI, I have to have it before my full retirement date which I think is 66 years and 6 months or something weird like that. It takes longer than 6 months to go through the process. I've always been proud of the fact that I can take care of myself with no assistance. Going on SS early was the best decision I made. I was working 2 jobs at the time for about 65 hours per week and was ready to collapse.

You want to vastly change the anxiety treadmill? Quit drinking completely ! Give it 100 days! Alcohol fuels and feeds a vicious anxiety loop. I honestly never knew how much anxiety I had until I gave it up for a dry January with a goal of making it forever. Now it doesn’t cure it but I now how mastery over it and can identify when and where I choose to put myself into situations that drive anxiety threw the roof. I also handle these so much better and clearer .. especially social situations with alcohol. Google the links and stories of women .. read Elizabeth Vargas’s book Between Breaths. Anxiety and problem drinking go hand and hand.

That's because you're most likely self-medicating. I would suggest that you seek therapy to discover WHY you were drinking to being with since alcohol changes levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain, which can worsen anxiety. They are what make you feel "happy". You may feel more anxious after the alcohol wears off. Alcohol-induced anxiety can last anywhere from one hour to one day after drinking.

Yes and if you drink what is considered “socially acceptable Mummy Juice” daily you unknowingly build up a problem. I stopped drinking as part of a health challenge and didn’t need a “professional” to clearly realize the physical and mental benefits. Years later I’ll never put that literal poison Ethanol in me again. There is an alarming global trend of dangerous drinking going on and it’s professional women from 40-60+ years old that have serious healthy complications from their “self-care” drinking. If you wind down with a drug, it’s a problem. Alcohol screws with your dopamine levels, how your brain processes emotion, anxiety, stress. It is a leading cause of breast cancer. Causes bloat and deep tissue fat. Dramatically reduces your immune system .. I can go on. It addicts the same way heroin does and is an psychological addiction first more than a physical one that is commonly associated with it.

Bottom line - it may make you "feel good" in the moment, but it's a depressant and none of us need depressants right now. ??‍♀️ I've known "social" drinkers that binge drink who are alcoholics. If you need it and you don't want it, you have a problem. You can go to virtual self help meetings online or your nearest hospital. Withdrawal from alcohol can kill you.
