Is it weird to love the new norm?

To clarify, I don’t love all of all the craziness of covid and violence happening around the world/nation — but I am embracing some of the perks of just slowing down, working from home and just loving to live. I’ve become so much more intentional when it comes to keeping up with family, friends and even strangers. I have a better work-life balance. And things I took advantage of before (ex: getting out, hiking, having a great meal), I very much appreciate more now than ever. I’ve become more humbled during this experience and although I’m so hoping for many changes to come from 2020’s unforgettable year, I appreciate the extra love that I have for others and life in general. There’s a lot of sadness around us — and that’s natural and to be expected. But we can’t forget the positives. What's bringing you happiness lately?

I think it is wonderful to see a silver lining and take this time to reset your priorities.

I agree with the sentiment and am also fortunate to have the ability to now be 100% remote, plus I have access to other things like necessary technology to support the continued education at home for my kids, flexible manager/employer, and some opportunities this year for additional time off. I was starting to feel burned out and have taken advantage of not commuting, etc. I think focusing on the positive and taking the good out of a situation is the best we can do, and hope it inspires us to do more in areas of our lives which were passed over during commutes, etc. Spending more time with my kids and really feeling how many hours a day we were spending apart has even motivated me to take a short sabbatical this summer. I'm looking forward to time spent outdoors and crafts/projects!

Totally normal to enjoy things being calmer and quieter. I've loved having my family home together more.

The new norm has been my norm for several years now. I took a remote position when my daughter was born 8 years ago and never looked back. My husband and I are both introverts, so we haven't had much of a social life since we became parents. My mother has a host of immune/health problems, so we were already extremely vigilant regarding disease transmission. All this remote work/hand washing/home-life balance stuff is just an average Tuesday to me. The only real difference is that now I am homeschooling on top of everything else, and I haven't set foot inside a store since March. I am, obviously, a proponent of remote work. I am a far more productive employee and a better mom for it, and I am eternally grateful to my employer for supporting me in this way. I can only hope that this shutdown will show other employers that it can be done, and that they will allow employees who wish to stay remote to do so.

I LOVE not having to run, skip, drive, fly, train all over the place as I have for decades. While there are aspects that are challenging, I feel liberated by the lack of travel and meeting logistics.

I went to a remote role about a month prior to COVID coming in. I was still getting used to the whole working from home thing. It has definitely given me a greater appreciation for cooking at home all the time. I like my own food better than going out!

I just said that to my husband. I'm enjoying the slowing down, the quality time with my husband, the calm from the daily hustle of busy schedules, traffic, etc. We certainly don't want the virus and my heart goes out to all who are impacted by it directly or indirectly. I do miss friends and personal connections, but other than that... loving the chance to refocus, recenter, and gain a new perspective on life.

Thank you for this post. I too am loving many of the changes of the new normal. I find myself reaching out to friends and family more. Many of the aspects of my life have slowed down in a positive way; i.e. less commuting, more free time for hobbies, more walks etc. My company has come up with new ways of doing our jobs remotely that may become the new norm and would love it if I didn’t have to go into the office every day. I have many friends who are musicians and this is the one aspect I miss the most. Facebook live performances are just not the same as live music. This is one thing I can’t wait to return to normal.

I learned that my job is very doable from home, and my quality of life without a commute and without an hour of getting office presentable and then packing a lunch is much better. I will either find a way to continue this with my employer or move on when the economy feels a little more stable. I couldn't really envision it before, after 20+ years in an office.
