I would recommend keeping your head down while polishing up your resume and starting your job search. The sad thing about a good job is that things change, and upper management just wants an expedient solution. Sometimes that solution is good, and other times not so much.
Is it possible that this woman is hoping to step into his position when he leaves? If so, can you see yourself working for her? She appears to have managed up to a level where she’ll be the logical solution once he is out. I’ve seen stranger things happen. Keep in mind that she’s likely aware of how others in the office view her.
Good on you for noticing that the once comfortably warm water is starting to get hotter - be proactive and find your next step. This puts you way ahead of people that “hope” for the best and stay put too long. While your current boss is on his own path right now, don’t let his path derail yours.
“Who moved my cheese?” albeit an aged book, sums it up quite nicely. My workplace uses it as one of the “must reads” in the office library. It keeps people moving on their path in a way that covers the employee, as well as the organization.
