Introverts who don’t like video calls

I do a lot of video calls because I work remotely. Usually if I have a choice and it’s not a client call I will turn off my camera because I feel uncomfortable presenting in general and especially hate looking at my own face when talking. But I wonder if this is being perceived as anti-social or I’m hurting my relationship building with colleagues who would connect better if I turned on my video. What do you suggest for someone who doesn’t like to do presentations?

I always opt out of video on calls for similar reasons and worry about the same thing...! My gut is that it is, indeed, better for the perception others have of you as a professional to show yourself on video. This is on my list of things to work on in 2019, actually. Also because I feel being on video kind of forces you to be totally present, which is another plus!

While I have no problem speaking in front of a group, I loathe seeing myself on a conference call. I think it's the web cam angle, but I keep my camera covered all of the time on my laptop. Some conference rooms have cameras, and those don't bother me. So if it was me, I wouldn't be offended. :-)

When I have video calls with a webcam, I opt to keep mine off as well. I just find it awkward because sometimes there's a delay and it can be distracting. I'm not in a role where this happens often though. However, if you are wondering whether this is impacting your relationships or image at work, that inkling is probably rooted in something that led you to believe it is and I would urge you to work on your presenting skills in general as Emma Maple suggested. The ability to present well and appear comfortable (whether or not you truly are :) ) is often viewed as a sign of leadership. Perhaps turn off the screen that shows your own image to yourself if that distracts you/makes you uncomfortable. And prior to a call remind yourself why you're on the call and make yourself feel as confident as possible before turning on your video :).

I understand when people don’t show their face in video calls but it’s usually a one-off circumstance. It’s not an all of the time thing because showing your face adds a personal approach to the conversations you’re having.

If you don’t like presentations or showing your face, maybe that’s an awesome obstacle to try and tackle.
