Hoping For Big Change

Hi All! I am currently residing in Cincinnati and am looking to move to Chicago. I am in a Marketing Communications role and would like to transition into Branding or “general” Marketing. I have been aggressively applying for 3 months with only one phone interview. I’m not sure how I should stand out in a pool of such diverse and qualified candidates. I am soon to be graduating with a masters degree in integrated communication and advertising. I thought this would help me stand out, but maybe not. I have talked to friends and they have all suggested I take low paying entry level jobs, although this advice is helpful it makes me nervous to get paid less than what I am currently being paid in a much more expensive city. Has anyone mad a large change like this? How long did it take to secure a job and what strategy did you take? Thanks!!!!

Have either of you read Steve Dalton's "The 2 Hour Job Search?" Are either of you on LinkedIn with a professional photograph and profile? I am also looking at companies outside my living area and willing to relocate once I have a position in hand, not before. Glassdoor can help in your search for companies in Chicago, LinkedIn can help you in locating people who presently work for the companies which you would like to work for. Get into the LI groups which the company people are in - put in comments, connect with personal invitations to the company people. Recruiters will find you - however in your settings of your profile, make sure your connections can only be seen by you. Recruiters may mine through your connections and see who you know.

Hi Daisy Im in the same predicament as you. I’m in CA looking to move to Chicago. I’ve heard from a few friends who live in Chi Town that the best way to get hired is going through a recruiter. One friend also suggested I take a leap of faith and just move. So my resume has a Chicago address and they don’t skip my resume. There’s also a lot of job fairs were you can go meet with hiring managers. That’s my next move ... fingers crossed

I haven’t had much luck with recruiters. Do you have any suggestions on a recruiter?

They vary by industry. I’ve been following LaSalle Network and i have sent my resume to a few others. Haven’t heard back so I don’t know how good they really are. I’m hoping the job fair and the on-site interviews will turn something up.
