Personality is INTJ, career hunting, just turned 40, and moved to a new state- HELP

Thank you so much for having this community. In January, we moved to NW Arkansas and we love it! Now to my dilemma... the job search. My experience is impressive, yet the lack of a college degree is causing a headache in my career hunt. I do have some college (3+ years combined), read lots of books, read journals, and attended tons of seminars. I love doing everything I can to move myself forward and excel in my career. The headache comes when filling out online job search resumes and online applications. I am being weeded out of positions that I am very qualified for because I do not check the "degree" box. My last position was in the Legal Department of a State agency. Our department focused on $5000 to multi-million dollar contracts and negotiations. My boss trained me to his level. He turned me loose to lead high level meetings, teach agency workshops, draft contracts, negotiate vendor contracts, etc. Before I left, I was teaching Attorneys how to do my job. How do I get my resume in front of potential employers and get paid what I am worth?

I think that including a cover letter where you can will be key! I would include some of the points that you mentioned in your post here, emphasizing your level of experience. Good luck!

Thank you for the feedback! I never thought to write my Cover Letter this way. Love it!

Dee, I can sympathize with your plight. Applicant tracking systems tend to assume everyone fits into very clear cut boxes and have system requirements that make it hard for people with untraditional backgrounds like yours (which actually sounds great; just the lack of a formal degree) hard to get through the software itself. In addition to applying for positions online, I would make sure that any position you are interested, that you also find a human being in HR or the hiring manager to send your resume and cover letter to. That way, you have a way of "slipping by" the applicant tracking system machinery.
