I feel like my boss is not responsive or engaged in discussions about my career advancement.

In my annual review, he was really flip - and it only lasted about 5 minutes. I really want to get promoted -- and I feel like I'm ready. Any suggestions about what I should do?

I totally understand you. My annual performance review lasted less than 5 minutes with the questions " are you satisfied here, do you want to move to a different department and why" with my supervisor looking NOT interested. If you still enjoy what you do, best if you create your own work and offer that to your boss as a start. Afterwards, compile all you've done and the results and prove that this is why you need that promotion. It's annoying and sucks to admit but there are still some places that require you to convince your superiors to prove your right to climb; where as your supervisor should realize that based on your performance the rise should be rewarded. Anyways, my final suggestion is that if they aren't responsive, then initiate the reason you need this advancement rather than wait for them to suggest it.

I had a boss that hated talking about career advancement, he was deaf to it. I tried being consistent, but it wasn't until I had a new boss that things changed. Some higher-level women recommended I find a new job. Ask him for some concrete examples of promotable work or ask him to explain which tasks on your plan will lead to your promotion. If you guys agree on a concise, simple plan, then he may be on board with how to promote you. He might not know how to even approach it.

Ask him what you need to work on to be promoted, if he can't think of anything then he may agree you are ready. If there are things to work on, I would document your progress and have monthly meetings to review. .
