I'm getting an IUD for the first time, and I'm so nervous!

A couple of my friends who got them said the pain was pretty significant. What should I realistically expect??

I'm going to be brutally honest here because I did not see my experience going the way it did. My doctor suggesting taking ONE ibuprofen before the procedure - TAKE MORE. I have not had kids so I knew that I was to expect a little more pain than women who have given birth. The pain was so intense I actually thought I was going to pass out - thankfully it doesn't last very long. I walked out feeling pretty good but had excruciating cramping for weeks and even months after. My doctor said some women's bodies 'reject' the foreign object and can be a reason why this happens. About 1.5 years in I feel like I've finally adjusted to it, however I still get a monthly period and bad cramping. The only reason I switched to an IUD is because I get ocular migraines, and it has been recently suggested that women who get ocular migraines should not be on the pill (or any hormones for that matter). Hopefully you have better luck than I did, but wanted to share.

I got mine a little over a year ago, it was a simple procedure and you get rechecked soon after to make it implanted well. You’ll have some cramping, but it should subside. I barely get a period now at all, but can still tell my cycle because I get many of the other symptoms.

I’m actually very curious to hear more answers. I’ve been thinking about it.

I had some pain for a few days and then it went away. I have had it now for over a year and it's great. I chose to use the non-hormonal type.
