what do you do on weekends to further your career?

Lately I've been feeling like there are probably small, non-stressful things I could be doing on weekends to help grow my career (ie helpful books to read/podcasts to listen to, getting organized w/ my to-do list Sunday night, etc). Does anyone have any weekend habits they'd recommend?

When it comes to the weekends I leave work behind. It's the one time to do me and clean my house and do chores and all that fun stuff! ha ha. Now that spring is coming I'll be outside a lot more. I do keep up on things though when I have some down time and I like to read articles on LinkedIn.

It could be useful to reflect on the week you've just finished. Note the tasks that you really enjoyed, those that didn't light you up, things you're learning, etc. This will help you put together a clear picture of things you enjoy and your strengths as you consider career advancement.

I am consistantly checking out material from the library to help coach a friend who needs support. Witihin that I read quickly so self help and business boks go fast. So I use my downtime (I don’t really get weekends) to create a take away paragraph, then map that to do I need to improve, how to impliment, and does it require my boss to take action as well. Sometimes I discuss these tatics w my son (he’s 8) on his level as to how to handle school like a job and deal w problems.

I try to update my resume every month over the weekend. I'm not actively looking but it really helps me go over my monthly accomplishments and see if there is anything that needs to be tweaked.

I tend to use the weekends to recharge myself and try not to bring work home. Exercise is a great way to work off stress and recharge. Reading and getting lost in a well-told story is also enjoyable. Lately I've been thinking about taking some type of artistic class, such as pottery making, just for fun. I have a friend who has a similar position in an international company and we'll take a long lunch and use each other to discuss our current challenges and get a different perspective or suggestions on how to handle difficult situations. That type of help is also something to help recharge on the weekends.
