My coworker smokes right outside our office's front door.
So, I don't smoke — and if you do, that's fine / your prerogative! But the smell of cigarette smoke has always really bothered me personally. One of my coworkers DOES smoke, and he chooses to do this in the area directly outside of our office's front door. So, often when I'm going out or coming back from lunch, he'll be there and I have to walk through his cloud of smoke to enter the building. I don't work on the same team as him, so we hardly interact at work outside of these moments, but he actually seems nice enough. I have NO idea how to bring up to him the fact having to walk through his smoke bothers me, though; do I just wait until we happen to be alone at the water cooler together to bring up? Send him an email? I've also considered asking HR to more clearly make the area by the door a non-smoking zone. But then I worry that's me taking the easy way out. Help?
