Explaining periods to my children

My daughter is 10 and I saw an ad for Thinx (or it could have been one of those new tampon subscription companies) that talked about how girls now get their periods at age 12. I also have a younger son and he doesn't understand what pads and tampons are (but they both have asked). I have tried to explain both to them a little bit but tried to mostly brush it aside when shopping for the products and today I decided that my hesitancy was totally uncalled for. Women menstruate and I think its fine to talk about and I wish I had a better vocabulary or approach for what to do. What have ya'all done here? Anyone with suggestions?

Purchase an age appropriate book that discusses menstruation and have them ready it. After they are done ask if they have any questions or concerns and go from there.

Do you have one to recommend? My one daughter is older now but for some reason I never thought to look for a book. Thank you for the idea!

The one I purchased for my girls a few years ago (who are now 10 and 7) is titled: The Period Book and it's written by Karen & Jennifer Gravelle.

I'm definitely with Vanessa on just being upfront about it but totally hear you on not really knowing how to initiate/confront it. I mean... it's not a standard/daily conversation. :) Preparing your child for menstruation is especially great prep for something that will essentially happen soon! So sharing why it happens, when it could happen, what kind of symptoms she might have and that the fact that it's a totally normal phase of life could be fun things to emphasize! Let us know how it goes!

I thin it's better to be honest and explain to them in terms they understand that it's a normal part of being a woman. Better you control the conversation than have them hear misinformation from kids at school.
