Fitness hacks at home?

I've been struggling to keep up a workout routine through this quarantine. I log on for work early in the AM and sit at my computer all day long until I'm done (which is usually later at night when it's already dark out; there's so much to do!). I have been trying to get my 10K steps/day in where I can (usually only on weekends), but don't really love doing that walk at night since street lights are limited in the area I'm staying. I also just signed up for the free trials of Peleton's digital app and DailyBurn and hoping I can try to squeeze in those, but I don't have access to weights or much space for these workouts in my current home. Plus, by the time I finish work, I'm so mentally exhausted. Do you have any tips for how I can squeeze in more workouts or even quick fitness hacks? Or maybe even just some advice on how to take better breaks throughout the day?

I got a decently priced recumbent bike and try to make use of it at least 3 times a day. It's in the basement and my office is in my bedroom so it's a decent walk to get down to it and back.

We have launched group fitness on Zoom. It’s a fun way to connect with people, get in shape and get motivated during this crisis. Email Master Fitness Trainer Herb G. [email protected] to join.

I've got equipment at home from when I was in physical therapy (a lot over the last few years). You can do a lot with resistance bands you can get for cheap on Amazon. A Swiss ball and some foam roller exercises are part of my routine. My largest piece of gear is a mini-trampoline I jog on--you have to start slowly (maybe 3 minutes initially), but it's a great workout. I also just bought a Cubii under-desk elliptical. I work in an essential service, so I'm still in the office. I can pedal while I'm working on the computer, answering the phone, booking appointments.

I've been doing the evening yoga flows on the Peloton App when the day gets away from me and I haven't been able to fit something in. They are a good amount of activity but designed for the evening so I am not all revved up after, then sometimes I follow it with a restorative yoga class (by Dennis!) where you just lay around in the poses and I am sooo ready to sleep after that!

Until about 14 months ago, I’d get up at 4:30am for CrossFit. After multiple injuries, I had to give that up, but I never stopped waking up early to workout before getting ready for the office. I have to workout in the mornings because I know myself too well, I will not do it after work. I find yoga and Barre classes on YouTube. I also find workout challenges on Pinterest. You definitely have to schedule the time into your day at a time you know works best for you.

Have you considered adding time on your calendar, like a scheduled meeting? If you are not taking a full lunch hour, you need to. Your brain needs the break. ;-) Us some of that hour to go for a walk and grab something to eat! Good luck.

Add it into your calendar in 5-10-15 minute spurts. Whatever you can do. Go up and down the stairs, take a quick walk outside, do a series of squats and jumping jacks.

Great tip! I have to do better at taking mini breaks for my mental health too!

Yes! I schedule my rest and (full) lunch break into my work calendar so it's a part of my day :)

Look up "body weight workouts." There are several subscription services which are offering a free package during the lockdown period - one is Sam Heughan's My Peak Challenge. Popular online fitness gurus post routines and videos almost every day, so search Facebook or Instagram for ideas for something that works for you. Kaisa is a popular fitness coach, and recently I've been watching Train With Shelby (which is specific for horseback riders, which I am). Shelby in particular has been posting lots of flexibility routines and stretches which would benefit anyone! Kaisa posted a funny video using toilet paper rolls for an exercise routine, and Shelby posted one with paper plates in lieu of sliders and a pot filled with canned goods as her "weights." Make sure that during your work day you change your routine to get up and stretch or walk up a flight of stairs or do a few squats. Good luck but have fun trying out some new stuff! Good for you for making this a priority! It's so important to move to release stress and improve our immunity systems right now! I don't have a real hack -- but what I find works is doing online yoga (yoga is my jam) first thing in the morning. If I don't do it first thing, the day just gets away from me.

I'm definitely not a morning person haha but you're right - I may have to squeeze this into my morning routine in order to make sure I get it done. Thanks for the tip!
