I have an employee I inherited about a year ago. He's a nice guy, but absolutely terrible at the job. I've tried coaching, extensive training, motivation, disciplinary action, everything. He says he's trying and gets really emotional and says the expectations are unreasonable. But he doesn't even follow simple documented processes and causes more harm than good sometimes. He has 25 years of experience in the field, but it does not show at all. We've reached the final step of corrective action and he has not improved at all. He had several recent instances of avoiding work and of doing the job incorrectly. I'm spending a lot of time cleaning up his messes lately. I feel terrible at the thought of termination during a pandemic, but I'm at a loss. We don't have any light, easy work to give him, we're completely swamped as it is and need good, reliable help. This is a first for me and I would love input from the community. Am I a monster? I feel horrible.
