Favoritism Present in My Current Company

Hi Ladies - I am having some career troubles and could really use the advice. I interviewed for an internal promotion and did not get the position. The person interviewing me has showed microaggression of sexism (not listening when I speak and listening when my male colleagues speak) and hints of favoritism. The person he promoted was within his inner circle at the company. I am unsure of whether it was sexism, favoritism, or I wasn't the best fit of the role. I am leaning towards the first two because I have been the top performer in my segment for the past 4 quarters and based on my qualifications alone, I would have been the best fit. I have a debrief to hear about this news from the person that interviewed me this Friday. What questions can I ask to really probe for feedback to understand what the determining factors actually were here?

Who is your champion within the company? You need to find a champion to help you navigate the corporate waters in this type of situation. I've had several times in my career when my champion was on an upward trajectory, and I was swept along with them. Then when they moved to a different company or department, I flat lines. Make sure that you have more than one to assist you with this situation. An outside mentor, to your department can also guide you and provide objective insight.

Totally love where you are going , Trina! Having an advocate or sponsor on your side is critical as you want to move into different roles. You want someone to be able to talk about you in those bigger talent discussions!

Thank you to Kristen and Anonymous! Both of your advice helped as I asked very pointed questions and feel a lot better about my efforts.

I would ask what qualifications you fit and which you did not. Then for vague answers prompt for more, either a direct question "strategic in what way?" or by mirroring "not strategic..." and letting them respond. I was in a similar situation; over two years it escalated to bullying and I escalated to stop it - and succeeded, but it remains a biased, toxic work environment and I am leaving. I hope your situation goes more easily. Good luck!

Exactly what I was going to suggest! Hopefully it's legit. If it's a little wishy washy, then you may want to consider speaking with someone in HR. Good luck!
