I had a co-worker who retired April 1 with probably the greatest outlook towards his next chapter that I have ever seen. He didn't call it retirement. He called it "his reFIREment!" Meaning, he was on to achieving goals he always wanted to do but didn't have time for when he was working. He does some consulting. He became a minister for his church and does prison ministry. He is tracking his ancestry in the States and beyond. He has so many things he wants to do, but now he gets to do them without feeling rushed or pressured. I have about 7-8 years to go and I'm using Mike's attitude as mine...what do I want my reFIREment to look like?

I love that! We spend so many hours for so many years doing our jobs that we forget about all the other cool things we could be doing! How fun! I may start making a list for my "reFIREment" right now!!

I couldn't agree more with the volunteering suggestions. Such a rewarding way to share your skills and give back to your community. Charities are always struggling to find volunteers and would appreciate your life experience.

These are all such great ideas! I'm not quite ready to retire but it's looming and I wonder what my "retirement career" will be. It seems a little daunting, going from years of structured "work" to just doing "whatever". No one really teaches us how to do "whatever". If you like being busy all the time, there are some fabulous ideas already mentioned to keep yourself busy. If you want to just lie around, lie around (and don't feel bad about it)! I assume you've completed an amazing and fulfilling career, so maybe sitting in the backyard with a book and an iced tea - although it may not sound "driven" - is just the ticket. If you crave the socialization you used to get from going to the office, you get to make new friends (that can be challenging, but, again, great ideas above!). In short, you get to teach yourself how to be retired and there are really no rules!! How fun! Scary, maybe, but fun!!

1. Travel - Rent a motor home and see if that type of travel appeals to you within your country or visit other countries 2. Remodel / renovate your home 3. Volunteer - Teach (so many options), Mentor younger women, Retirement homes, Church, Political campaigns 4. Take classes - Whether cooking or college courses, it can be fun and keep your mind active 5. Learn an instrument - did you always want to learn to play the piano? Now is your chance! 6. Read - Join a book club, read the classics, try fanfiction on-line 7. Start a Blog 8. Learn a language 9. Start a hobby - Gardening, photography, water color painting, bowling, golf, bingo, writing 10. Join a fitness group – it’s never too late to get into shape!

Hi, Lair! Do you know what's missing for you? A sense of purpose, clarity of what you want, a connection to your legacy, or....? Another way to say this is, what would you like more of in your life? These questions are intended to start connecting to your Heartset, which can then guide you towards the what and then the all-important how. I hope this helps!

I also would join others who might be retired in possibly the community centers where you live. You may find that you are not alone!

Do you have any interests/hobbies? How about volunteering? I remember when I was unemployed in 2009, I looked on volunteermatch.com to find opportunities. Through that site I got connected with Aeon and ALS organization. I still stay active with ALS association serving on their Gala Committee.

Hi Lair, There are some great start-ups out there looking for your expertise! I'm sure you would make a great consultant in whatever field or industry. All while on your own schedule. Angelist is a great resource.

I too believe volunteermatch.com is great as well. If you have the chance, check to see of Onebrick is available in your city or state. They're a volunteering group that supports multiple needs (very fun events like galas, admin support, clothes drives, food pantries and more). They offer chapters throughout the US. Be brave! This is a new chapter in your life that you get to brainstorm, create and reinvent. You never know, you might find a new hobby, you might start beekeeping and selling your own honey. It's all up to you.

You're invited.
