How much risk have you taken to find the right job or career?

I’m looking to push beyond my normal boundaries and think creatively about approaches to my search. Any tips on ways to get out of my comfort zone?

You might try a small company where you get to do lots of different tasks. You'll get a taste for different roles and may find something you enjoy more than what you're doing now. Plus, people change jobs a lot at startups so you won't get stuck doing the same old thing. I recently left a large corporation to go work for a small company (65 people vs 1000s). I was interested in doing more writing but didn't have experience or a portfolio. The new company doesn't have a full time copywriter and the expectation would be that I pitch in. So I got to try a new skill (copywriting) with the security of leaning on my existing skills (marketing). What interests you? Where could you try it out without giving up the security of what you already know? Good luck!

This year I left a job that was toxic, soul crushing and abusive. I was terrified to leave. Living alone, not wanting to change jobs, worried about finances... I took a temporary job through a recruiting firm. I never thought I would take a temp job, I have two degrees from very well known educational programs and was disappointed in myself in where my career and life was going. I had a feeling about this temporary job, something in me just knew I needed to be at this company. I interviewed, accepted the job, and was converted to a permanent employee very quickly. The risk I took was needed and it changed my life - I am at a large organization that respects me, and values me. Something I never had before.

Contract work is a great way to experiment! Many agencies also offer benefits.

The risks I took in the past may or may not suit you however, I reached out to some friends and movers and shakers that I knew over the years and just said HI! Asked how life was and what projects they are working on? In addition I also asked connections and friends the same question, What I learned fascinated me. One former colleague started a medical education company that was growing like crazy, she asked me what I was up to and I told her my role would be eliminated in a few months due to a corporate takeover. Next thing I knew I was on a plane being interviewed for a new VP role.Basically the standard way of online job applying is a very deep black hole. it pays to go deep into your network and go make friends again. It's 2020, put yourself out there and be intentional , but make it fun ! Once people learn what you are up to or have an affinity toward they will help you!

Last year, I was looking into going into a different field, more into D&I, non-profit and multicultural marketing. Some things I did was an informal interview of someone who works in D&I. And at that time realized it was still a developing field & not as many roles within it. I went to a non-profit panel where we could learn more about how to get our foot in the door especially some of us who have a background in a diff field. And I connected with all of them via LinkedIn. And one reached out to me recently. Try to do some of these things. Best, Natalia

Based on my experience, most people struggle with approaching their job search as a solution selling project. If you haven't yet done so, consider sending one impact email a day to pitch a hiring manager to dialog about an outcome you could create for his/her team. For a template to do this, download my free ebook at landdreamcorporatejobs.com.
