Extroverts and Isolation

I don't know about you, but as an extrovert, I am finding it harder each day to shelter-in-place. Needing people to feel energized is a real thing. So, to all of you extroverts out there, what are you doing to stay centered during this lack of community time? I do connect with friends from church on zoom several times a week, chat with family by facetime and phone, but frankly, its not enough. Open for other ideas!

TOTALLY feel the same. I too am an extrovert, plus I live alone. I'm grateful to have a dog that I get out to walk 3 times a day, but even that is getting old. Also grateful to still have a job and able to work from home. BUT - the novelty of zoom happy hours with friends wore off a couple weeks ago since I spend a lot of time on them for work. My emotions go up and down for sure. Some days I feel fine - positive and productive. Other days I really struggle and have a hard time functioning. I've been doing live streaming yoga classes a few days a week which is nice, but yet another thing in front of my screen. I miss human contact - my nearby friends are all being very strict on the social distancing so haven't seen anyone in person for quite a while.

As an introvert, I feel completely comfortable in isolation! I sympathize with you, though. It must be very hard to endure, especially not knowing when it will be over. I don't know if this will help, but most of us have aspects of ourselves that we are not well-acquainted with, so this might be a good time to explore your inner self. A good place to start is with childhood memories. Dreams also contain a wealth of information about yourself. I understand that a lot of people are having vivid dreams during this time. Be safe, and carry on bravely!

I'm struggling, too. I feel wilted and stressed. And our stay-at-home has been extended to May 15.

Ours too - and I think we'll be luck if we get out before June 1.

I walk with a friend (we meet at a park, and walk 6' apart) twice per week. That plus the zoom meetings has really helped me feel not so...apart... I'd definitely try to connect with people.

I am completely with you. My husband and I are going stir crazy. He is more of an introvert. I am definitely an extrovert. I miss people. I miss seeing and hugging people. I miss my family. We have been doing a lot of Zoom chats the past couple of weeks and that definitely helps.

The zoom chats definitely help, but wow! They do not replace face-to-face time. I think it is about energy. Extroverts seem to thrive on interacting with the energy from others. Perhaps that is why we wear out introverts so much :)

It is absolutely energy that you get from others, which gets lost on screen.

Maybe taking a walk in the neighborhood or in a local park if they are open in your area...

I walk every day. That is not quite doing it for me though. I really need interpersonal communication.

I'm with you and know exactly how you feel. I live in the suburbs, so we are still able to walk and get outside. Me and two friends met in front of my house and I put lawn chairs 10 feet apart the other night. We all wore masks and brought our own glass of wine (they live in walking distance) and we just chatted from a far. It was so happy.

I was wondering why I’m having such a hard time during this sheltering in place, and I also learned this about myself.; Extroverts are struggling. I live in NYC, so finding people isn’t as difficult, but still very different these days. I took a bike ride along the Hudson River Sunday,, where people usually run and cycle. I stopped to sit and enjoy the day and people-watch for hours. It was just what I needed. Good luck.
