Sex and the City

Does anybody besides me think those women are vulgar and shallow? I love fashion, and I truly aspire to support women in creative fields, but I get depressed watching it because they don't seem to have much upstairs...

Thanks for everyone's input. I admit I've only seen two episodes on which I based my opinion. I decided not to watch any more because it seemed pretty low-consciousness to me. I prefer women who are social pioneers or who inspire creativity, or at least are able to teach me something worthwhile. I grew up on a farm, so the sex part doesn't bother me! I do get the friendship aspect, because finding friends who are loyal and forgiving is not easy. "Blind privilege" may be the element that I find distasteful, given the economic and social injustice so many women have to deal with today. Thanks again for responding- gives me a benchmark to go by.

Well, overall, it was good to hear that the show was general liked. It showcased empowerment, friendship and relationships and all. A little dated now is right, yet still entertaining.

It was a relevant and influential show during it’s time, but I have rewatched episodes recently, and find it’s very dated now, especially from a sociological POV. The world is so different in 2020 and I find their blind privilege embarrassing! However, the relationship themes of the show do stand the test of time. I have three best friends and I can still see all of us in the characters. I also adore the fashion!

No, I don’t think they’re vulgar and shallow. The theme of the series is sex and the city. So relationships and sex are what they’re going to talk about. I find it deeply relatable on various levels of relationships. The psychology of the shows fascinates me, and if anything else -it’s a fun show. When it originally aired the concept of sexually independent women was relatively new. Is it vulgar sometimes? Sure, but it gets the point across. These women aren’t going to sugar coat their sexuality, which is a major theme in the show.

I loved that show and have watched it start to finish about 10 times. It was not about fashion or shoes, only Carrie was a shoe addict, it was about empowerment, support and friendship.

No, don't judge them by their shoes. I have many pairs too though not as nice. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not jealous at all!

I live in New York City where it was very popular and took place. It was entertaining and I never took it too seriously. More of a fantasy for some than anything. It would be expensive to live their lifestyles.

I guess I am too critical. I have a lot of shoes, so how can I judge them, eh? :-)

Well said. If you ever do watch the show I'l love to hear what you think of it. It's been on the tube a long time, but I just recently watched for the first time on Netflix. I am usually in shock by television in general, but I don't think I am a prude! Mixed feelings here too!
