How much does your average work outfit cost?

My mother-in-law has such awesome workwear that I genuinely admire. I want to dress like her but I don't have the budget nor am I really a fashion expert. I'd imagine her average outfit is $200-$300 -- including shoes, pants and a top and/or jacket. I've never had the courage to ask her but this made me genuinely curious and figured this awesome community was open to answering! Have you ever thought about this? How much does your average work outfit cost? Any go-to brands you shop for?

Wanted to add something about thrift stores. Usually I hear this phrase and think Goodwill or Savers or something of that nature. It's really hard to find work clothes there if you're in a professional environment. My secret to success is a resale shop. They will buy my old stuff (I don't get much) but the selection of dresses, pants, tops, and blazers is absurd. (Haven't had great luck with shoes, limited luck with bags, I try not to spend on jewelry.) The chains near me are Clothes Mentor and Plato's Closet but look into what might be near you. It's so much more affordable (and environmentally friendly) to buy secondhand.

I'm probably wearing $100 worth of clothing right now (including shoes) and I'm in jeans, booties, and a super comfy sweater. We're a fairly casual work environment. But more importantly: Just ask her. She's your MIL!! She'll be flattered that you admire her and she may offer to take you shopping!!

I usually shop thrift stores and sales! So all in all my complete wardrobe would lean towards 1,000.00 or under. I stick to basic black pants but live in a southern climate so my main wear is dresses that allow blazers or jackets. I have found Several main chain stores like Chicos has a black Dye that goes w almost any designers black! We r talking goes w calvin klein all the way into banana republic! Knowing how much I love clothing I had to make critical decisions on my work wear. This is the first year I’m making myself get the full use out of my wardrobe (thrift stores really allow a no guilt over i used this a few times so yawn) within all this I have been able to invest into my jewelry collection (jewelry and sales is my main career so I need basic pieces to help encourage sales) my thing if the item completes the questions Do I need it Will I used it Will it mix well with other pieces And is the price point there (needs to be a sale I have 3 pieces I have paid full price for(

Hello fellow member of the great black pants brigade! Well cut black pants almost seem to be the ladies' equivalent of the mens' blue suit. They fade into the background and let your top, jacket if you're wearing one, and accessories take center stage. Some years ago I laughed to someone that I have 3 pairs of the exact same pants, all hemmed to the exact same length, and had worn one pair or another all month and their reaction was astonishment that I'd effectively been wearing (clean versions of) the same pants almost all month and it hadn't registered to them. This experiment was prompted by an Australian morning TV host's similar experiment with a blue suit he wore on air every day FOR MONTHS, with no viewer ever writing in to ask, "What's going on with that guy's suit?".

I never really thought about this before! Including shoes... My average work outfit is probably around $150-$200. I personally would rather rotate a smaller workwear wardrobe with wearing a little more on the pricier side of clothes. Although I'm sure this may not be the most popular opinion.
