Career

I chose the wrong career and now I wonder every day how to change the very nature of what I do.

Does anyone else feel like this? I am so lost.

I agree I just ended up where I am. Now unemployed, having a hard time finding similar job as before. But coming across plenty of branch manager positions of which I have zero experience! My friends tell me to apply anyway but I hate wasting my time - in the meantime with my consumer lending background I’m not finding anything and so frustrated. Wish I had a caring “insider” friend to get me into their company in banking. I’ve always taken pride in my management role and did very well, I would work hard not to let them down. But unfortunately I don’t have anyone willing to come to the rescue. Now thinking about going into healthcare where there’s always plenty of work. Just need to take medical terminology course.

I've gone through this before - it's not a good feeling. I was somewhat lucky in that I was early in my career when I realized I definitely wanted to shift paths. I was still in an entry level role at the time, so pursing a new path didn't mean I'd need to take several steps backward. That said, it was still scary and felt like a significant risk; I even ended up leaving my job before I'd found something full time because I was so certain it was not the right fit for me. I had a rocky 6 months doing some part time work before I found a full-time role, but ultimately, it was so worth it. I began doing the kind of work I'd always wanted to do, and today I couldn't be happier with how my career has progressed. So my advice is to make moves even if it feels scary. Chances are you have a lot of transferrable skills that'll help you land a role even if it's quite different from what you're doing now. If you feel like it's necessary, you can take a course to get yourself up-to-speed on some of the responsibilities/skills you'd need in a new position. Think hard about what you've learned/experiences you've gained/skills you've developed that will apply to the new role or industry even if the nature of what you'd be doing is different.

This is an interesting article... it may be a good time to just try something completely new... no experience necessary... https://www.wsj.com/articles/employers-eager-to-hire-try-a-new-policy-no-experience-necessary-1532862000
