when your decorating style clashes with your partner's

I will be moving soon, so I am thinking about how I want to decorate my new place, what kind of furniture I want, etc. My partner and I are both very into design/aesthetics but we have vey different tastes. I don't like most of the furniture and accessories he's interested in, and I think he feels the same way about the stuff I want to buy. Has anyone else experienced this? How do you compromise in this kind of situation?

I was once planning to move in with a long-term partner. He made it clear he expected me to get rid of a lot of my things (I'm a maximalist, he was a minimalist). My solution was to get rid of him and keep my stuff. So I'm not sure I'm of much help here.... ha. :D
