Assistant Secretary of a County Park Volunteer Organization
Now it is time for a seasoned experienced woman to ask younger career women for some input for a change. I belong to an organization that was developed through my local county government. It is divided up by the 9 county parks and is called "Friends of the Parks" We are there to preserve the treasures of the park and to enhance the parks as well. We raise money for these projects by have events such as oldies dances, light up night at Christmas time, gardens in the park, plant sales, and various other events throughout the year. We are governed at the first level by a board of 5-10 people selected by the county government. The only thing a person has to do is ask a county council member who lives in the park's region and they are named to the board. It is that easy. The term is two years. All board members have decision and voting rights. If you are not on the board you have no voting rights or decision making abilities. So my issue is when there is an event where volunteers are called for, none of the board members ever show up. My particular park's board has twelve people and 10 of them are never at any of the volunteer or fund raising events. Today was an event in the park that the group co-sponsored with the Park Rangers and only the person who coordinated the event and myself was there from the group and the coordinator is not on the board. So I am wondering and want some opinions, Would it be ok to require that if a person wants to be on the board that they first have to put in so many volunteer hours or events before getting on the board? Just so they understand how everything works in the park and where all the facilities are. There have been many times people look at you like you are talking a foreign language they n ever studied when you mention a grove or a field. My thinking is you place people on corporate boards who are experienced or familiar with a company, why not here and have the people knowledgeable of the park since they are voting on important issues.
