FGB’ers, what is something that you’re really good at?

I’m randomly really good with directions and I absolutely love learning about maps. Unexpected answer? I know.... Your turn. From really random skillsets to being a total boss, what are you really good at?

Just trying to make a difference. :-)

My superpower is that I have a genuine appreciation for diversity. I know that it can be more comfortable to be around people that are similar to ourselves because we are less often pushed out of our comfort zones, but it is important to hear and learn from different perspectives and to remember that different is not necessarily wrong, it's just...different. I personally find a diverse group far more interesting to be around than a group of people that are pretty similar to myself. Diversity is also good for business. A 2015 McKinsey report on 366 public companies found that those in the top quartile for ethnic and racial diversity in management were 35% more likely to have financial returns above their industry mean.

Super organized and very good at breaking things down so people can understand them. I created a "guide" for my department that consists of just about everything we do. Where to find it, step by step how to do it with visual aids, and more. I'm also very creative. Love using my creative skills for all things in life like work events, decorating my home, helping others improve things they struggle with. I like to think out of the box and see how we can improve things to make them more efficient and enjoyable.

I'm very good at proofreading, editing, spelling, grammar, etc. A little old-school, but I help my co-workers, too!

I admire you. It's not always easy. I am a culture ambassador at my job and keeping spirits up can be difficult in an unstable environment. Would love to know what you do for people who just don't believe things will get better.

Director of Finance & Administration

Being that I had worked at a particular organization as a Director is Finance and Administration for almost 12 years, managing and later on overseeing HR, Operations and Finance, I can honestly relate to many of the situations that could arise in a growing and ever-changing organization. Therefore, I use my own experiences and “institutional knowledge” (as many colleagues liked to say) to connect with them and share what worked for me and what didn’t. Not to say that I always had the solution to their issues, but always remaining neutral, and helping them see things from different perspectives. Having them share with you their thoughts, LISTENING, finding solutions together rather than dwelling on the issue, and taking them seriously, is key. Helping them build collaborative relationships, trust and having open communication since the very beginning is crucial. This builds a sense of community and supportive culture within a workplace, which reduces the possibility of conflict, and keeps employees happy and supported if there is any issue to be addressed. Hope this helps!

Thank you. I will definitely give it a try. It certainly can't hurt. I've been trying to run events to pull them together and realize we're a family in the end where each one of us would support the other. Thank you for the advice!

Impromptu speaking. I did 11 years of competitive public speaking (on the stage and as a coach.) I am THE BEST person to have in front of a crowd when the slide deck fails (totally happened) and I can teach ANYONE how to present without notes.
