Looking for work

What does a single mom do for work? I have limited hours I’m available so it limits what I can do. I have no help and can’t afford daycare until I work a steady job. So I only have hours that my kids are in school. 6 hours a day

Check with your local America’s Job Center. Some have programs specifically for single moms to include programs to help with child care and information on educational opportunities that may cover child care and living expenses.

Look for Customer Success jobs, these can sometimes be done part-time, off-hours, and remotely. A lot of companies use online chat programs and need real humans to help with responses.

Experiencing barriers to employment? Hit me up!

Hi there, and thank you for your question! First, beef up a functional resume that highlights the good stuff you are good at, front and center. Use the skills you are exercising in that resume - the personalized care and attention, providing transportation, medication reminders, communicating with diverse populations . . . things of that nature. You are online, so that says that you are computer-savvy and have the potential to learn and grow your operating skills sets. Invest some time in learning Google Applied Digital Skills and check out Coursera's freebie certification options. Submit your resume to temp firms (Kelly, United Talent, etc.). Make sure to target agencies that specialize in administrative positions, because you have a better chance of getting daytime hours and no nights, weekends, or holidays. Perfect for you, right? Inside secret: Many employers use temp firms to screen potential permanent hires. Whenever a temp firm tells you that they have three- to six-month assignments, that is your signal that they recruit for temp-to-perm positions, and that your first ninety days is your probationary period. The second ninety days would be the time it will take for the temp firm to recoup its losses as you go to permanent employment, because once you go permanent, that temp firm loses the commission it has earned from your work. Also, working through a temp firm allows you the freedom to really explore your career options and figure out which direction best suits your interests. You will be getting in at entry-level. Milk that for all it is worth. Ask lots of questions. Learn something about everybody else's work. Offer to assist the people with whom you will be working. This will give you extra tools in your career-focusing toolbox. Another avenue to explore is healthcare settings, like hospitals and/or specialty care centers - like physical therapy facilities. Dietary, housekeeping, and laundry positions generally have set schedules, with very little required overtime. This is also true of state and local government agencies. Maybe look into (if you haven't already) a free after-school program for your kiddos. If they can handle maybe two hours in an accredited after-school program that is free or income-based, that will give you a couple of extra hours that you can use to work - or just kick back, really. If you are having trouble deciding where to go first, hit up the O*Net Career Interest Profile tool. Do the stuff in the purple sections, and you will see results where your true interests are and research career fields that match those interests. In the meantime, start thinking about how you learn best - visual, aural, and/or tactile. Doing so will help you narrow down the best working environments for you. You are at a very unique and creative point in your career journey. Try to avoid grasping at straws. Go for the milkshake. You will be glad you did.

Have you considered being a lunch lady or bus driver at a school? I've been a lunch lady for 7 years. Works well with the kids in school. As they got older, added a second job in the evenings.

Some schools run programs through the summer. You would qualify for unemployment if it doesn’t.

Ah, maybe project based work? Check local classifieds and Craigslist for data entry things if you have computer skills.

Thsnk you! That’s a good thought. I don’t have the greatest computer skills but I do have them.
