Pay after demotion & re-promotion

HR peeps: If I was demoted from a position and took a $4/hour pay cut, and I re-apply and get rehired for it, is it reasonable to expect the same pay as before? Is there a general standard for this or am I at their mercy? I know for a fact that they have been paying others way less than what they had paid me for it. It has been 1.5 years since the demotion.

If you are demoted from a position but hired back ... I think it's up to the manager what you are paid considering you were let go

It’s not unreasonable, unless compensation policies have changed for the firm in general and they have started pinching pennies. If they’re not willing to rehire you at your old salary immediately, you can always politely ask for at least a short period of probation, at the end of which you are considered for reinstatement to your old salary. It’s not an unreasonable request to make.

May I first ask why you were demoted?

Yes. I used poor judgment and did something that was inappropriate. It was definitely a poor example for my team. I def could’ve been fired and reported to my professional state board. I served my 90 days probabtion from that, took the demotion, and have proven myself as a responsible trustworthy leader since then. I have been left in charge many times, and have trained new staff. My direct manager agrees I have paid my penance, so to speak.

Thanks for being honest with that! I think it's 100% reasonable for you to get back up (and maybe even then some). Don't let the fact that this is a demotion stunt you for life. You are right, you paid your dues. Hopefully over the last 1.5 years you have proven your value and competence. One thing that I do find interesting is that you noted they pay others way less than what they had paid you - do you know why that is? Why were you making so much more in the first place? Just curious on this and how you can overcome this potential objection if/when you ask for more I specialize in helping women negotiate salary increases so if you are wanting some tips on how to do this effectively, I would love to help ya out! I also have a free FB group if you're interested in joining. I do lots of live training and challenges there.
