Cold Inquiries to potential employers.

Recently I was given contact information from a former colleague who had done research on my behalf, (phone and email) to make a "cold" introduction for any potential job opportunities. Please note that this was not a direct contact situation. What have your experiences been with the best approach for this type of situation? After some thought I made the decision to craft a well thought out email instead of a phone call. Thoughts, Comments?

Thank You! I will let all of you know how it turns out. My instinct was to email as well. I appreciate everyone's feedback on the subject. As a former producer/manager myself I found it awkward to be "cold called" for an opportunity.

I did an email in this situation on LinkedIn. Look up examples online — they had a 66% success rate (2/3!) for me. My example below ... Hey PERSON, I listened to the PODCAST Episode, starring you and COFOUNDER, today on my plane ride home. I felt so much connection to the two of you while telling your story, and am so thankful you did it through the podcast! I am continuously blown away by your team, advocacy, and organization. I’ve spent almost ten years in the tech startup world, working across verticals (government, tech, financial, medical, you name it!). My primary focus is in sales and marketing for software platforms, and I have a lot of experience working with growing tech companies and helping them see opportunity through a different lens. I also have a passionate focus on PASSION TIED TO THEIR NEED. COMPANY is doing incredible things, and I would love to be a part of it in any way possible. I’d love to tell you more about how my skill set could help you reach and exceed your scaling goals as you continue to COMPANY MISSION. Congratulations on your success. I’d love to find a time to chat more about the company and tell you how I could help. Best, ME

I think an email is better, too. Make sure you have a really strong subject line so that it's not deleted off the bat. And if you have any shared connections on LinkedIn or elsewhere, try to turn it into a warm introduction- your chances are much better that way.

Can you clarify? Are you the one looking for a job? Did you ask the former colleague to make the intro - or to do the research on your behalf? In general, I agree on the email vs. phone call because it can be hard to get caught off guard like that - and most won't pick up their phone to unknown numbers anyway.

Sure! Yes, I am the job seeker and my colleague did the research on my behalf and on his own.
