How much to spend on a present for my mother-in-law?

I really am not sure how much to spend on my MIL...my own family isn't huge on gifts so I don't really have a comparison. I also think it's really tricky because my husband nixed doing a joint gift and strongly suggested his mother would like to get something from me specifically. How have you navigated this in your life?! HELP

It would depend on the occasion, is it a holiday, her birthday, is she retiring or starting a new job? I find gift cards impersonal, and you don't want to waste money on a material object she'll never use/want (if you don't know her tastes well), so would stick to an experience, i.e., a spa trip/massage or mani/pedi are always welcome.

I have a general gift limit of $60, which is usually enough to find a high quality small, locally made item that fits her interests and pair it with a bouquet from the farmer's market. Alternatively, you could set a date and treat her to breakfast or lunch, just the girls.
