Has anyone else here traveled solo, and what was it like? Where did you travel?

I’m taking a 5 week sabbatical and I’m SO excited about it. My partner can’t take this amount of time off so I’m planning to travel solo. Japan and Argentina are on my bucket lists but I’m open to travel wherever and I’ve honestly always wanted to take the leap and explore a new country alone. It sounds terrifying and exciting at the same time. Solo travelers, any advice?

I did Argentina solo. Stay at hostels, even if you can afford a hotel. It allows you to make great friends that you will stay in touch with, possibly for life. As a general rule of thumb, just be super careful with your belongings in Argentina, especially Buenos Aires. I'd say most of the people I know had their phones stolen at some point in time, but if you are careful like I was, it isn't an issue. Just be aware of your surroundings. You won't regret it! One of my favorite trips.

I love traveling solo. Toronto was my first trip, then I did Spain. I found it to be very liberating. No negotiating on plans, no waiting for your friends to finish doing hair and makeup lol....just come and go as you please!

Road trip Iceland. Seriously grab a camper van and circle your way around the island. Gas is pretty pricey but totally worth it because you'll feel like you're on a different planet. Iceland = amazing.

I've never done it but would love to try. I know a bunch of people who say it's a great experience. I've heard from friends who have traveled alone that it can definitely help if there's not a huge language barrier, so that's something to be mindful of.

Learn their language. Not everything, but the basics. Hello, thank you, bathroom & getting the check. People appreciate the fact that you tried.

Hostels are the best places for making friends.

If you’re open to new experiences and meeting new people, I think you’ll be fine! I made a lot of friends by posting up at a bar and just starting a conversation. I found that people are fascinated when they know you’re exploring their country alone and want to help/strive up a conversation.
