How do you make space for your other identities?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Gretchen Rubin talks about investing in your identities, and shares a story about identifying as "a reader," and building time into her week to read. What are your "other identities," beyond family role or job title, and how do you make space for them?

So important to carve out time for yourself - YES! I make time in the evening to make things. Right now, I'm working on a recreation of a particular Game of Thrones dress that's expanding my skills as a pattern drafter and embroiderer. It's incredible! After a recent job search, I am also trying to stay on top of my LinkedIn and my professional networking.

Great question! Besides my job and relationships, I would identify myself as a personal empowerment enthusiast and LGBTQ+ ally. I make space for the first through reading self-help books, journaling, going to therapy, attending yoga classes, etc. As for my LGBTQ+ alliance, I write queer-related content to teach others about the community (which I'm a part of), but I also watch RuPaul's Drag Race avidly, visit LGBTQ+ museums and nip ignorance in the bud when I hear stereotypes or derogatory comments from others about the community. Essentially, I try not to increment my identities, but instead lean into all of them so that I'm always putting forth my highest and most authentic self.

I've never really thought of other identities this way but it's interesting. Come to think of it: I'm a wife, manager, artist, health advocate and fitness guru. I try and not change my identities though. So for example, I'm a fitness guru and at work, I try and stand at my desk as much as possible. At work and at home, I try and eat healthy. I guess I try and utilize my skills/what makes me... me... in every way that I can.

This is an interesting question and in fact sometimes I feel like "identities" can be a bit constricting as well, does anyone else feel that way?

This a really good question lol, and extremely though provoking. I can only imagine how overwhelming it can be to juggle so many hats and identities. But sometimes I think you can have identities that reinforce one another. I'm a writer, aspiring author, and I guess my identity as a blogger can reinforce that due to my writing and learning my voice. I think the most difficulty I've had is being someone who's unemployed while also being someone with an entrepreneurial spirit.
