Relocating To Los Angeles

I'm in the process of moving from New York to Los Angeles, California. I have planned a trip to LA October 16th-30th. I have never been to California before, and am wondering where to start? I am searching for a fulfilling and decent-paying job, a more permanent residence (besides my airbnb), and general advice on matriculating to my new city. Any advice is helpful.

Drive around to get a feel for the different areas. I've lived in LA for 8 years & my fav areas are the South Bay & Pasadena. At one point I lived near Culver City, where the 10 & 405 fwy meet, it was horrible. I felt like I couldn't leave my apt until after 7pm bc traffic was so bad. Also, wait to sign a lease until you find your job bc yes traffic will dictate your life. There are definitely a lot of networking events here in LA, take advantage as one could potentially lead to a job. Welcome to the City of Angels

Thank you for all the advice, Nati. These are all great things for me to take into account! Can't wait to experience LA.

I love the beach cities. They are family friendly and great to connect to the city via a commute.

Hi Lauren, I'm a LA native (currently living in NOLA). I'm planning to relocate back home in six months myself. I agree with what everyone has stated. The traffic can be a bit stressful. Rent is higher there are a lot of job opportunities. Definitely look into outside the city ('burbs)for housing if you desire cheaper rent and are okay with a longer commute.

Hi Chiante, I am planning to stay in Glendale for a few weeks. I'm not too familiar with the geography of LA? Is Glendale the 'burbs'? What are some other areas to look into if i don't mind a longer commute to the city?

Glendale is a suburb as well. The beach cities are a good area as Lakewood, Eagle Rock, or Pasadena area.

I live about 40 minutes east of LA, in the 'burbs, and agree with all the others that living close by where you will be working will make your life easier and less stressful. Suggest you rent until you know where that will be. Rents and home purchases will be higher the closer you are to the coast, but the weather is nicer, therefore...more expensive. There are a lot of job opportunities. You might want to post your resume or job desires here so that we can help with recommendations. I work for the power company, Southern California Edison, and we have a lot of open positions right now but a lot of them are very specific to a utility company.

I am going to say, Welcome, as well. Los Angeles is a big, diverse place. The questions of, what do you do, and what is your industry focus, is really what is going to dictate much of your experience and choices. Also, do you have friends or relatives here to help with the transition? Even an alumni group can be helpful! Good luck, and feel free to bounce some ideas off of us. We people from SoCal tend to be a friendly lot!

Thanks, Nancie! An alumni group is a great idea; I never thought of that. I seeking employment in marketing and product development, primarily in the beauty industry. I don't have any friends or family in the area, only a few acquaintances.

"Almost" welcome to LA Lauren! As Melissa mentions, it really depends on what your career goals are and what industries you're interested in. The entertainment industry is big in parts of the area; technology in others; finance in others, etc. And if you can live near to where you work, all the better to get acclimated to the area and meet people. If you can reply back with some ideas I think you'll find a lot of folks that are more that willing to help you settle in. Good Luck!

Thanks for the response! I am interested in working within the beauty industry. My intention was to get an AirBnb for the first month so I don't get stuck in an area with a bad commute from where I end up employed. Can't wait to relocate!

Hello, it all depends what industry you want to work in. LA traffic is horrible so the closer you are to your new job the better....BUT you do get used to a 40min commute is needed.
