Peloton bikes?!

I've been thinking about getting one, but I'm hesitant that I'll actually be motivated to use it or not just stop in the middle of a class because no one is around to see me...anyone have one?!

I heard of a new company, Flight, that's launching their beta soon (in a few weeks, I think, for early users) that connects you with personal fitness trainers to do 30-min. workouts whenever and wherever you want through mobile devices. You can (literally) roll out of bed before work, put on your workout clothes, do your workout session in your home (or hotel, if you're traveling) with a live trainer and then go start your day. I was part of their pilot program and it was amazing. My trainer coached me throughout the entire session. I had some lower back pain that she helped me with. I can only workout between 5-7 AM during weekdays and had no energy to go to a gym that early and couldn't find a local trainer to come to me (I'm in SF, she was in NY). I've tried other apps, YouTube and other things and none seemed to work. I also considered Peloton but I don't have room to buy a lot of equipment and she was able to do a bodyweight-only workout. The fee is $50/session for a 30-min. workout but it was totally worth it for me for the convenience and personalized attention. It's great for busy people. They don't do any advertising or I haven't seen any. If you want to sign up to be an early user, you can check them out at www.takeflight.live

There are some very good reasons to buy a Peloton and I know several people who are self proclaimed "Peloton addicts!" I decided against the Peloton last year because I thought it was too expensive. In addition to the "start up costs" of buying the bike and getting it set up (I think around $3,000), you have to pay up front for a monthly subscription to the classes for, I think, two years. After that, if you don't pay for the subscription, the tablet on the bike has no other functionality. I wasn't prepared for that financial commitment, so i bought a spin bike and a bracket to hold my IPad instead. You can get the Peloton classes online via the iPad for about $12 per month. It's not exactly the same as the real time Peloton class, but it's a much cheaper alternative and works for me.

This is a great alternative, thanks for the insight

If you're worried about the motivation to finish your workout, have you you considered joining Strava and connecting with other cyclists and peloton users? That little bit of added feeling of accountability is sometimes all you need. Even better, if you have a friend/coworker/acquaintance interested in getting a peloton (or one who already has one), you could be accountability buddies. Getting your workouts in on the same days, even though you're both in the comfort of your own homes, would be a fun way to encourage each other.

That is so smart! I actually use Strava for other outdoor activities so I love that idea.

I love my peloton!! The classes do you actually make you feel like you’re in a class so dropping out feels just as awkward as if you were in the gym They have created several types of classes that make it easy to get a quick High intensity workout or low impact workout With the addition of the peloton tread; They were great road running workouts as part of your subscription. I travel frequently and being able to have the Peloton app on my iPad also makes it easy for me to do a work out at a hotel gym as long as they have a spin bike while using the app for motivation

What's Peloton tread? Like a mini treadmill?

Hmm, I bought a bike to use at home with the same thoughts but ended up selling it on Craigslist a year later. I actually don't work hard without being in a different environment and working out in my living room just didn't work. My brother-in-law got a Peloton and subscribed and all that but uses it maybe once a month. If you're not in the habit of exercise, no device will make you do it.

As a cyclist, I'm curious about why one would choose a Peloton over an actual bike.

Being able to cycle in any weather is one reason. Not having to worry about your safety or traffic is another.

You can do the same with an indoor trainer, though you'd have to program your own workouts (there are apps for that though too)

have you taken the class already?

Yes! I tend to like spinning classes, but sometimes the actually class environment is a lot for me to handle so I think I might enjoy the at-home aspect more, but I'm still nervous I will just stare at it everyday and quit half way in because that's how I always feel when I'm at spinning classes in person...but I would never actually walk out.

I am curious about this as well. Don't have one, but so many people swear by it.
