Our daughter goes to Catholic (private) school and the plan is hopefully to send her and her sister (and any subsequent kiddos) to Catholic schools for their school career. It's funny because my husband and I have different reasons for sending them to Catholic school. His main reason is community... He went to Catholic HS and says the community and particularly the religious curriculum (not just Catholic) had a huge influence on his morals and values. For me, I grew up going to public school in a really small community (class sizes and graduating class sizes were small), so again, I think it's probably an underlying community thing for me. But we live in a rather big city and the public school districts and school sizes are gigantic. My kids are smart, but not going to be geniuses, so I fear that they will get lost in the larger schools/districts. My daughter just graduated kindergarten, but our first year in her Catholic school made me feel soo at home and at ease (especially as a working mom). Again, different priorities and different schools of thought, but I wouldn't change our current situation and am really thankful for our school community.

Thank you for sharing. I so often feel like the choice is framed as a "forever" one but you're so right that you can ebb in and out of public vs. private based on what's available and also your life (and financial) circumstances. There are definitely pros and cons to each and I appreciate the perspective since I'm stressed about how I'll be able to afford private school for the next several years.

This is a very personal decision that involves so many factors, particularly the needs of your child and each one's needs may be different in some cases. In my case, we started out in private school due to the quality of the district we were in at the time, but by the time I had my 3rd, private school tuition seemed an impractical expense, so we moved to a better school district and placed them all in the local public schools. For me, the community feel and social aspect of going to the local schools with your neighbors outweighed some of the downsides of larger class sizes and less variety of electives or AP classes.

This is so helpful- thank you for sharing! I hadn't considered the impact of schooling within the same community, so another factor to think about.
