Adding to your resume

How do you add something to your resume that you don't get paid for but offers some good experience? And it's not considered to be charitable work. Would that still go under volunteer work since you're not getting paid for it.

When I'm adding experience like that to LinkedIn, I add it under Volunteer. If you're including it in an Experience section on a resume, you can always specify that it's unpaid part-time work

I list Formal Education and Professional Experience as sections on my resume. Volunteer experience and the such are under Formal Experience. It is different from listing Employment. I would try and be creative in showcasing your "other experience". Come up with a savvy title that peaks interest.

I agree that you can mix paid and unpaid experience in the same section, but I might avoid using the words "employment" or "work" in the headers for those sections. Maybe a term like "Related Experience" or something related to the work you're doing (for example, "Marketing Experience") would work.

Thanks! I simply labeled my previous employment as experience in general so I guess I can still place it under my experience since I didn't label it as employment.

Hey Anon, experience is still experience even if it wasn't paid. Unless they ask you specifically whether it was a paid position, I'd put it under Employment ☺

Rather than Employment, try Work Experience. That doesn't preclude non-paid work.

Even if it's a current position? Wouldn't that confused employers on whether I'm available to work or not? I do agree with you though.

Employers would likely just assume that you would give a notice OR that it's an extra-curricular activity (i.e. Board Member). Without knowing more specifics, I would say "Employment", "Volunteer Work" or "Additional Experience" are all viable options.
