How much do you tip bartenders?

I thought this was a simple question. But I realized after having a debate with a group of friends that not everyone tips bartenders the same way. Question: If I buy a round of drinks and my total is $40, how much do you tip?

I tip $1 -$2 per beer/wine, $2-$4 for cocktails depending how intricate and pricey

I don't usually buy just drinks, too cheap to spend all that extra money on something that costs so little at home! But if I did, I think I agree with those that say they tip more for cocktails than just beer or wine. Beer or wine, I'd tip $1-$2/drink, unless the bartender offered suggestions of what to try, then I think their expertise would merit a bit more. For more complicated cocktails, I'd tip 20%. I'm in the Atlanta area, which is way cheaper than somewhere like NYC or LA. If I was in those cities, I'd always tip 20%.

I think there's regional differences, though. It seems like the New York area tips a higher than other places I've been. I'd like to believe it's out of solidarity, because we understand how hard it is to afford NYC on a server's salary!

What do you tip housekeepers in a hotel and doormen who store your luggage?

Doormen... $3-$5, I've given as much as $20 in the last though. Housekeepers, depends on the hotel. I typically keep the do not disturb sign out most of my stays

20% minimum always and more if my experience is a great one. Most bartenders are making minimum wage and are relying on getting 20% gratuity for their services to make a livable wage.

depends where I am, how fancy the drinks are. If at a bar where I order a drink like a beer or wine and walk away from the bar, I will tip $1-$2 per drink. If I am sitting at the bar or table, getting cocktails, etc I will do between 15% -20%

This. Not less than $1 a drink. I'm a weirdo in that I'll even tip on water usually, if they give me a decent pour and not some stupid little Collins glass - I want it to be worth the bartender's while to keep me hydrated :D

I always struggle with this. Like, do you tip someone more when they make a cocktail? It requires more time.

that's my reasoning. I usually tip more if I order a cocktail than if I order just a beer or glass of wine. I tip $1 for a beer and $2-3 for a fancier drink that's more time consuming to make

I'd tip $5... if for some odd reason my group decided to drink concocted drinks instead of a beer or booze + mixer, I'd maybe tip $10. I tended bar for almost 10 years and a $40 round could vary from a dollar or 2 up to $10 - just depends on the group

I tip 20%, always.

No way! For drinks only?? I'd tip a couple of dollars. Their service takes seconds.. that's different than being waitress or making food.

Clearly you’ve never worked in the service industry. 20% minimum is respectful.
