It seems to that females are doing most of the bullying and it's to other females. As we know, the typical female 'cattyness' is being brought into the workplace. I've experienced this and have had to leave a great job because of it. I have also experienced it in newer jobs. The entire workforce has changed. I'm finding that it is no longer good enough to come in, get along and do your job. We are now part of some reality show where you have to pass beauty and personality tests. If you don't walk, talk, think & act EXACTLY the same as everyone else. And if the entire company is not madly in love with you, then you are out. I once worked for a company whose supervisor REFUSED to train anyone NOT from his ' elite' side of the state. YEP. So I was automatically out there. One gal from my town had to lie and say she went to his highschool for a couple of years just to get him to answer a question. HE was born in an entirely different country, so I am not sure where this extreme bias came from. Of course, the other employees followed his lead and refused to talk with me while he was nearby. It was like being in school. That nightmare lasted 2 years. I still wonder why they hire people from areas that do not meet his approval. When I hired someone to do a reference check, they were told I was a great worker, but not the ' right fit'. I was told I was fired for making mistakes, if which I know is not true. Watch your back in these situations and double check all of your work. It is too bad that the workplace has reverted to some pre-70's lawlessness. These situations are exactly WHY workplace laws were enacted and somewhere along the way companies are thinking they are above them.

Donna, I agree that many good people are having difficult times over “fit” (it’s happened to me), but I don’t think that women are doing most of the bullying. From my experience, bullying can be perpetrated by men and by women— it’s not gender-specific. Rather, it’s a matter of character. People of integrity don’t bully.

I agree women are the bigger bullies in the workplace. Women tend to fear other women and be jealous. This is brought with territory. I am dealing with it know, I started a new job and new career. We have a group of people who all hired and are training at the same time. There is this one little girl in our training group and she can be just rude. Mind you I'm probably 25 years older then her. Not to put her down but she does not equal me in any way or form. The other day our trainer who is a women put this little girl in her place and moved up to the very front of the class separate from these other group of people who tend to follow this little girls lead. It was actually very nice for the rest of us who want to learn and work together as a new team. The thing is you should not have to deal with it. It's a work environment that becomes hostile. You can file a grievance against this person which the paperwork goes over your boss's head and straight to HR.

I think I am going to hire the same person to do a reference check on him again and bring charges if he is continuing to do this. The company has numerous public reviews of this happening to other past employees. Im very surprised they haven't had a lawsuit yet.

I wish that were the topside of the case , but im finding that more & more companies are allowing this behavior. Refusing to accept it sounds great, but isn't always doable, especially when it done in a behind the scenes, backstabbing manner. The girl boss I mentioned in my post was always lovely to my face. Her dirty deeds were done behind my back. The first 2 I let go. The 3rd I brought to her bosses attention. She was caught manipulating the company computer system & decided to tart retaliating before the investigation was even over. I quit. If I had manipulated the system and impersonated another employee I would have been drug over the coals, then fired. The company allowed her to keep her job. These companies apparently LOVE these people. Good people are losing jobs because of this activity . A few good lawsuits would correct the situation Unfortunately we live in a society who feels they should accept this behavior I order to bring in a paycheck.

The only way to change the work environment is to refuse to accept bad behavior. Not all companies act badly. You should find one that's proud to be enlightened...
