What qualities do "good" bosses have?

I would like to be a manager one day, and I wonder what people might want in a boss. For me, objectivity and fairness are important traits. What do you think?

Care about their employees' development and input more than their own title.

A good boss wouldn't bad mouth you to another colleague in your presence. They wouldn't hold back your End of Day Report four days in a row. They would ensure that they gave you the correct instructions for better work results. Most importantly they are honest, fair, and treat everyone with respect.

My best boss was willing to admit when he was wrong and was willing to learn from seasoned employees. He also stated that family comes first and that happy employees will be better workers. I loved working for him.

Be a leader not a boss. Supporting your team professionally and personally and empowering them really makes a difference.

Transparency - but that really boils down to trust. You gotta trust the people you hire and when you do, they'll trust you too. It takes time but it's my objective and what I admire most in my mentors / leaders.

I have a great supervisor who is leaving shortly. I told him how appreciative I am that he has always been supportive and I always felt like he had my back and was "rooting" for me, which is a great feeling. He told me he sees his job as a supervisor to support his employees and that everyone has talent and potential - he just has to nurture it.

Hi all What a great subject - I'm enjoying reading all of the content here. I could wax lyrical on this topic all day, however I won't! And simply offer one piece of advice. The Trust matrix is a useful tool - not only for Managers, also employees and people in general! Trust = Competence + Reliability + Integrity + Communication If one element is low, trust will be low. If one element is missing, so will trust. Wishing you much fortune on your journey to become a Manager - and by the way, try to be a Leader rather than a Manager :-)

for me Communication is the greatest from the Trust matrix, without the 3 tools Competence, Reliability & Integrity wouldn't be completed.
