I realized today that I don’t really have any work friends even after 5 years at this company. I am a senior level manager. I eat lunch alone every day (as do all of the people at my level it seems). Lower level staff can be seen eating together, but none of the management is ever seen eating say in the cafeteria with others. I often sit and read a book alone in the cafeteria or outside at a table. It’s almost as though the company doesn’t want people to interact. I don’t know why it’s hitting me so hard. I have never been management before and always had lunch buddies or friends who catch a drink after work etc... but NONE of that happens at this place (500
employees). I asked some of my team if they wanted to grab lunch and they looked at me like I have 5 heads.
Should I just write it off as a quirk of the company or is it typical for managers to be alone at work?
*This came from thinking about the fact I have no peers to talk to and it is encouraged that we remain in our “siloed” departments vs cross the organization, those who try to reach out are warned its not welcome, and you will be viewed as some sort of traitor to your silo.
