After the company that I worked for was sold to a large corporation last year, almost everything changed and after almost 17 years working there, my job was eliminated and I was let go. At least I am old enough so I got Social Security and Medicare. If I do get another job, I only want part time. I am collecting Unemployment but looking for another job at this point is nervewracking.

Aurorarickman, I’m sorry to hear about the upheaval in your life. I can empathize, as I was downsized after nearly 20 years with my previous company. I hope I can help with some suggestions and tips. Firstly, review and re-write your resume. You’re probably used to a chronological format and may want to consider a functional resume, which highlights skills and abilities, as opposed to the chronological order of experience. Google the role(s) you want and add “sample resume”. There might be phrases or activities that you haven’t thought of including. Just be sure to have that experience. If you don’t already have a LinkedIn account, create one and show that you are open to new positions (under settings). You can ask former co-workers to write recommendations for specific areas of expertise. You can create a filter on Indeed.com looking for particular jobs or companies. That brings them to your in-box as they are created. Post your resume on this site as well. Many companies use on-line application systems. You’ll want to submit your resume on-line. You may be able to subscribe to their application, so that it tells you when new suitable jobs are available. Every time you apply to a company, write a cover letter that shows how your skills and expertise meets their requirements. On a side note, ageism is alive and well, so be prepared. If you’ve let your hair go silver or gray, consider coloring it. First impressions are made in seven seconds, so you need to look and sound the part. Stand straight, be enthusiastic, make eye contact and shake hands firmly. Ask questions yourself during the interview. Send an email to thank whoever participated in the interview. It’s usually [email protected] or [email protected] Google is your best friend. Search for resume writing tips, interview tips, best part-time jobs for seniors…if you have a question, it can probably be answered there. Check out this site: https://www.thebalancecareers.com/ You might get discouraged, but always be friendly and enthusiastic. I wish you all success!

Sorry to hear this. Searching for a job can feel like a full-time job. Would you want to work part-time within a large corporation or does it matter?
