Going out during the epidemic.

Though my son is twelve years old everyone asks me why he can't just stay home while I run to the store. After all the stores are banning kids from entering because it's not safe. My problem is that my son is autistic and has ADHD. He's afraid of everything including his own shadow. The idea of staying home alone terrifies him and he begins to cry. However when I do take him to the store with me I insist that we both wear a mask. Five minutes into shopping my son is freaking out and having a major anxiety attack over wearing the mask. He begins trying to rip it off and starts crying. At this point I have no idea what to do. He doesn't understand why he can't touch everything and his face. He doesn't understand why he needs to sanitize his hands. So how as a parent are you dealing with this?

Yeah the grocery stores are super overwhelmed with deliveries right now so it often takes them a few days to get my order. My dad came down once and sat with my son but he is still trying to keep his distance and my mom and brother watched him another day but they too are trying to stick with social distancing. So it's hard and he gets all upset because he doesn't understand why he can't go to the grocery store and why he has to wear a mask. He is so confused by all of this and it breaks my heart.

Absolutely a tough one. I relied on grocery delivery a lot when my daughter was a newborn and have been using it during this pandemic. However, it has gotten difficult to get a delivery time recently. If for some reason delivery is not an option, do you have a neighbor, family member, or friend who would shop for you and drop it off?

That has to be really tough! I've seen some posts on my FB page about volunteering to car-babysit by parking next to each other and having one mom sitting in the next car while you run in. It's not perfect and may not work for your timid son so it's just an idea. Though, no matter what, you're the mom, and you know what is best for your son more than anyone else!
