Job Interviewing After Workforce Absence

So I've been an entrepreneur for the past year and now I have an interview on the horizon with a company in Washington, DC, that I applied to a few months ago. Honestly, I figured that they had already hired someone so I kind of put it out of my mind. But they called and now I'm at a loss on how to approach the interview because it's been months since I interviewed anywhere. There are so many questions swirling in my mind: how do I frame my entrepreneur experience as an asset? what questions should I ask? how do I determine the company culture? what if they ask about expected salary? what is a reasonable time frame for consideration if they make an offer? Also, what is appropriate to wear to an interview with an educational institution? Please help!

To me, someone having been an entrepreneur implies a lot of organizational skill, plenty of flexibility, the ability to be a self-starter and self-directed, and a willingness to take risks. So you're in really good stead there. Questions to ask: What do you see as the most important skills for the person who fills this role? What are the goals for this position? What opportunities are there for training and advancement? What company initiatives are you proudest of? Do your homework before the interview. Comb through the company's website. They may have some information about community/charity initiatives they embrace, which can give you some insight on culture. Look for employee reviews on sites like Google, Indeed and Glassdoor to see what workers are saying. People may be more negative than positive on those sites, but I've found any warnings from previous employees are right on target. Also do your homework on the salary. Salary.com is sometimes a little inflated but it's a place to start. If there are any local professional organizations in the field, you might be able to get some answers about salaries for the area. The old wisdom is to try to get them to put a number out there first; in California you can ask about a range up front and they have to answer. Don't know if there's any similar law where you are. Don't forget to consider any benefits while you consider the salary. Those can be worth a lot. BUT a good benefits package isn't worth as much if the salary isn't enough to pay your monthly bills, so weigh it all out. Remember, they called you! That's really positive. Good luck!

While I don't have experience in education, I can definitely tell you that entrepreneurial experience will help you get any job! Entrepreneurs work hard, often have to wear multiple hats - all things employers want in someone they are hiring. ASK about company culture. Look at related jobs /ask around here on FGB about salary in that industry! You got this, lady!
