Resume

I have not been in the workforce for 7 years. I'm in the process of creating my resume. Should I go with a functional resume or chronological resume?

Chronological, hands down. In my decade as a recruiter, I found functional resumes very frustrating to read. I often put them aside (sometimes permanently) and read the chronological ones first. Much easier to get a quick read on the candidate.

I think it depends on the industry. I work in the tech and theatre field. for tech jobs, always chronological (they want to know who you might have worked with that they already know). For theatre, go functional (they dont care when you did it, they just want to know more about it).

Chronological is the #1 format. Explaining your gap can always be appropriately worded in your cover letter. On your resume you want to include anything and everything you may have done over the last 7 years that kept skills current. What jobs/Career are you applying to?

I wonder how much HR's are missing out on great people by demanding the no formatting type resume.

I have both, and I almost exclusively use the chronological. Most applicant tracking systems (ATS) can’t read a functional resume, so you will never get a callback. Functional are great if you are giving it directly to a person, but if you are applying online, use chronological, no exotic formatting, no tables, etc. Check out Jobscan.co to see how well your resume matches the position.

99%+ of the resumes that come across my desk now and in the past as a hiring manager have been reverse chronological.
