Why are people so offended when you politely decline a line on a job?
In keeping with most career advice, I let folks know I am looking for something new, I am in a junior executive roll now and looking for equal or higher when I move. A lot of folks will tell me about a job that is well below my skill set and then when I thank them and say I will look into it I usually do follow up but if it’s a less senior role i don’t apply because I know I am over qualified and won’t get hired. I recently had a friend who is persistent I apply for a role in her relatives division of a large company and kept reaching out to ask if I had heard anything. I politely let her know I had reviewed the job but it didn’t seem like a good fit for me (it’s a role I had 10 years ago) and this friend responded “well you said you wanted a new job you should apply for all of them”. She actually got a little angry and this is t the first time someone told me about a job that I am over qualified for and then treated me like a snob for saying I wasn’t a good fit/it was a more junior role.
I am not out of work currently and it would be a waste of time, I have already heard from a variety of hiring folks my resume looks good but I am over qualified or worst they pay half what i want. Why is it with folks not understanding you may be over qualified?
