How do you get a job without an inside connection? Seems impossible. Is it really just a numbers game?

It's absolutely possible, but not as easy. Why not try to make connections at companies that are of interest? Those connections could be 'valuable' in a myriad of ways beyond job search. A strong network can help with referrals, introductions and industry expertise. If you don't already have a direct link, you can consider other ways to catch a hiring manger's attention through targeted outreach. Most people in the job search industry recommend 25% of your time applying online and the other 75% networking.

I've hired plenty of people who were freelancers from another company to full-time employees. The job hunt can't be draining but I'm sure you'll find something that works for you!

when I'm reviewing applications, the most impressive candidates make it clear they understand not just the job, but the company and what we stand for, and how they would contribute. Enthusiasm and genuine interest need to come through, so always, always, always include a brief but personalized cover letter. It makes a big difference.

I think that it is possible to get a job without an insider connection (or at least I have been able to do so many times). I also have hired people who do not have an inside connection to any other employee at the company. I think the trick is to apply to a wide range of companies but also to really know where you want to work and what special value you will be adding by applying. Nothing is a guarantee but at least you are spending your time on research for fit that may make your resume stand out. And of course, it never hurts to seek out people on the inside that you may know.
