Carry ons - to check or not?

I usually always just bring a carry on, but so often am forced to check it anyway at the gate. I just took a trip where I was offered to check my carry on for free, which I regrettably did so and the airline lost our luggage for over 2 days and I was stuck with nothing. I have taken hundreds of plane trips and this was a first. I think the lesson learned from this is ALWAYS pack a small cary on with essentials and a change of clothes. Has this happened to anyone else? What has been your takeaway from it? Do you still check all your bags?

I try to always do a carry-on and line up early to get on the plane before they start asking people to check bags! Usually always works - fingers crossed!

I always carry on and never check in luggage. I've learned to pack efficiently and stay in apartments with washer/dryer.

most of my travel is long term so I check in a bag. What I have done is fold T shirt and underwear in small ziplock bags and stash them in my briefcase, so in the event my luggage and I go in different directions, I have at least a change of clothing!

I use to carry on all the time. I found that between clothes, having to bring steel-toed work boots and a laptop that trying to carry all this on a plane was insane. I never had an issue where I was without clothes. I'll definitely consider bringing at least one set of emergency type clothes in my laptop bag but I'm sticking with checking in if it's more than one night.
