In applying for jobs, one of the things that annoys me most is the request for salary history or salary requirements. I think that job descriptions should state a salary range, so as to properly gear expectations. I recently applied for a job and stated a salary that I thought was high for L.A.; I was told by friends that it was cheap by NYC standards. Especially going from freelance to full-time, "salary history" isn't really an indicator of anything, and any number I pick for "requirements" is going to be based on whatever I can find online for what a position like that might pay in my city....isn't it better, more honest and more efficient to have companies state a salary or at least a range? Or are they just trying to pay as little as possible and therefore are waiting for potential employees to start the negotiation? Undervaluing ourselves is a constant battle for so many women: what's the solution here?
