Relocation

Does anyone have any connections in the Washington DC area? I am currently in TX and trying to relocate but its been hard. I feel like I've applied to so many jobs out there but have been rejected not due to experience but due to where I am currently located. It almost feels like its a "who you know" to get your foot in the door. Any help would be helpful!

I worked in DC in the mid-2000s (in startup tech as a product owner) and I have quite a few LinkedIn connections in the DC area. I'm happy to make an introduction. Let's connect

Six years ago, I relocated to the DC area and although the cost living is higher, and of course there is state taxes, and the weather very different (seasons)... I still miss Florida but this was the best decision for me. It took me 5 years. But being persistent paid off. By the way, FedBizopps.gov will help you to identify companies that received contracts. Then you can review their websites for positions that you might match your skills. Good luck.

Try a LinkedIn or Meetup search for the DC area. See if there is anyone in your industry you can email to schedule a phone call. You'll probably get few responses, but it only takes one to help you get to the next level. Just be sure to offer something in return for the phone call. I've had a few clients do well with sending an e-starbucks gift card of $5 for a cup of coffee and others who offer to write LinkedIn recommendations. Show you value their time and focus on making a true connection rather than focusing on your need to work - the communication will go farther. No matter what, I truly wish you all the best of luck. I know it's rough out there and I'm rooting for you!

I have same problem . There is 3/5 months even 2 years wait for out of state jobs . Not to mention it feels like no one is really reading my resume lol. DC is very expensive and kind of hands in political pockets place . Lots government contract jobs . I would try Virginia first on the other side of Arlington or Virginia Beach . I heard lots jobs there and kind of cheaper to live . Then make contacts & your way into DC Just an idea

I tried moving to a northern suburb of Richmond after I graduated from my (2nd) masters program to job search in DC. I would not recommend that you move there (Richmond) because of: the traffic en route and expense of parking in DC, and the roundtrip train fare is considerable. I thought I was going to volunteer at some policy organizations so I could get some exposure, but I could not swing the search and commute financially.

Honestly look in the department of corrections. If you don't want to be a corrections officer they have a ton of clerical. Because its in a prison a lot of people will pass but your safe.. Trust my Mom is retired Capt from a men's maximum security correction facility.
