Lost and disappointed

I've been working in the Customer Service field for over 12 years. No longer happy with my job or field, I have been apply for positions outside of the field for a few months. I have been rejected for every position I have applied for. I'm beginning to feel discouraged, as if I'll be trapped in this field for the rest of my life. I've considered going back to school to complete my Masters but feel I may end up in the same boat, struggling to find a job with lack of experience. Is going back to school my only hope or am I just stuck in a dead end field for life? Please HELP!!!!!

@Dorii, sorry for the late response. I would appreciate that if the offer is still open. @Erin Kallias, I'm getting for now. Looking for viable positions to apply for. Thank you for checking on me.

I'm sure we all can help each other out. I don't mind taking a look at your resume. I'm been in the same situation I've noticed when you are looking for employment outside of what you normal do jobs want you to be more specific. So if you are looking to be a admin and less of a csr included duties that you completed that are more specific to a admin. You can beef up your resume and still be honest. I went from retail, right over to a admin I was 20 and a young mother at the time and I had enough of retail! I wanted more structured hours so I took some classes and started on my resume. I literally only filled out admin positions and sure enough a secretary/admin entry level position can my way from a middle school. The process in job hunting isn't a walk in the park you are going to have dry spells. We are coming up on August students are going back to school and positions WILL be opening trust me keep that in mind and keep on filling out applications. <3

Thanks for the advise. I didn't consider having multiple drafts to my resume or the study courses.

Hi there It sounds to you like you are in a bad place, although your career experience says different! In the UK, certain employment / recruitment agencies will review a resume without a fee; perhaps see if that service is available? Note that you may need to register with the agency. Try to tailor your resume to the role for which you are applying. You may need multiple versions of your resume. Really sell your capabilities! You may not realise how talented you are and that may come across in applications. Another consideration is to apply for jobs where you may have most but not all skills, say 75-80%. Employers do not always know precisely what they want in an employee / to satisfy a job role and you may be the ideal fit in an organisation. Aim high! An alternative - even if short-term and an option - is to find home-based work. And perhaps try free online study courses to introduce new skills, particularly if this is a 'skills gap' in the type of job you want... Wishing you the very best of luck!

Thanks for your response. The 2 companies that did provide feedback stated that they felt I lived too far for their comfort. I'm researching companies to professionally review my resume. The positions I'm applying for are entry level jobs, just so I can get in the door but that's not working the way I hoped.

Ugh, so frustrating when companies decide it's too far....which is why I love blind screening where addresses are removed from applications. I would consider 2 things: 1. Don't apply for entry level positions, you have too much experience for those, and there are very few jobs where even if you are moving into a new field you would need to start at the bottom. 2. Have somebody look at your resume. Ideally you want your resume to look like you are the ideal candidate for the job posting, so see what job postings are looking for and see if you can put your accomplishments on resume that would resonate! Don't give up, when things aren't working out, try to change things up a bit. "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated!" Good luck!

Hey! That's a stressful place to be in, but I have a few tips to move forward. 1. Have you gotten any feedback from the recruiters or hiring managers you've been in touch with? This could give you insights into the reason you didn't move forward in a certain role. 2. Have you had someone take a look at your resume and application? Getting fresh eyes can help you get some perspective into how others perceive your material. It could either be that you're applying for jobs you're not qualified for or that your qualifications don't shine through when you apply. Best of luck!! You got this.
